Mixed week before Whitsun

During the week before Pentecost, very changeable weather with occasional showers and local thunderstorms will develop on the eastern edge of a low pressure system in Switzerland, with temperatures that are quite seasonal or slightly above average. Only Tuesday will stand out in the east thanks to a foehn current with mostly sunny and warm weather. On the other hand, there will be a lot of precipitation in the south from Wednesday to Friday. Over Whitsun, initial trends show partly sunny and warm weather, but the tendency for showers and thunderstorms is likely to be somewhat higher in the afternoon, especially in the Jura, the Alps and the south.

Slightly mixed but warm Whitsun

The weather over Whitsun from Whit Saturday to Whit Monday doesn't look too bad, with at least some sunshine and temperatures of 20 degrees and just over during the day. However, the days will not be completely dry, especially in the second half of the day with a focus on the Jura, with an increased tendency for showers and thunderstorms in the Alps and the south. This is also referred to as so-called daybreak weather. Despite the increased risk of showers and thunderstorms mentioned above, Whitsun offers quite good weather for all kinds of outdoor activities.

Regionally very different Easter weather

Over Easter, the weather in Switzerland varies greatly from region to region: The friendliest and warmest weather will be from Good Friday to Easter Sunday with partly stormy foehn winds in the Alpine valleys in the east, while the worst and coolest with partly heavy precipitation will be in the south. The west is in between with changeable and occasionally wet weather. Widespread precipitation is to be expected on Easter Monday.

Summer in April!

After today's rather unsettled Thursday, a ridge of high pressure will provide Switzerland with plenty of sunshine and exceptionally high temperatures for the time of year from tomorrow Friday to Monday. The high pressure current will turn from west to southwest, bringing in warm subtropical air, especially at the weekend and on Monday. Some temperature records are likely to be set for the first half of April, and absolute April records cannot be ruled out locally, especially at high altitudes. On Tuesday, a cold front moving in from the west will bring the exceptionally warm weather phase to an end.

Early summer and late winter - April with extreme temperature contrasts

The first half of April was exceptionally warm, with an excess of almost 5 degrees over the whole of Switzerland! There were also an unusually high number of summer days and even all-time April temperature records in some places. However, this was followed by a sharp drop in temperature in the middle of the month and an unusually long period of cold weather with snow down to low altitudes and even frost in some places. From one extreme to the other! Nevertheless, April 2024 will be too mild overall.

Stormy start to November with storm Ciarán in Western Europe

Tomorrow Wednesday, a big storm named Ciarán will form over the Atlantic under rapid strengthening, which will subsequently move over southern England to the North Sea during the night on Thursday and on Thursday, bringing gale-force winds of up to about 150 km/h in parts, especially in southern England and northern France, and here especially in Brittany. Associated with this are also in the western English Channel and on the west coast of France also high waves of over 10 meters in places.

Unspectacular at first, potentially dangerous in the middle of the week!

In the Swiss Plateau, there will be room for sunshine between the clouds today, but along the Alps it will be very cloudy – and there will be some snow in places. Tomorrow, an intermediate high will ensure fairly sunny conditions. Things will get exciting on Wednesday – a warm front is likely to create good conditions for dangerous freezing rain in parts of the Swiss Plateau.
